The Onslow Observer: Interim Committees, New Laws, & More...

Dear Neighbor,

I hope you and your family are enjoying some quality time together throughout this holiday season. As we prepare for the 2024 Legislative Short Session, we're continuing to engage with constituents in the district to learn more about the issues impacting our community.

Please take a few minutes to read our newsletter below, which contains updates on some of the things we're doing to serve you both at home and in Raleigh. Our office remains open as a resource to help you should you have any questions or need assistance with state government agencies. Thank you for your continued support and prayers. And Merry Christmas!

At your service,

Michael Lazzara

North Carolina Senator

Lazzara appointed to key legislative committees

Senator Michael Lazzara has been appointed by Senate Leader Phil Berger to serve on four key legislative committees for the 2023-24 interim period, as follows:

  • Co-Chair of the Joint Legislative Transportation Oversight Committee

  • Member of the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Capital Improvements

  • Member of the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Justice and Public Safety

  • Member of the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on the North Carolina State Lottery

Joint legislative committees are comprised of members from both the Senate and the House of Representatives, wherein each chamber selects a chairman from their own chamber to serve as a co-chair for each committee.

“These appointments are a tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact on our state's infrastructure, justice system, public safety, and educational funding,” said Lazzara, “I am honored by the trust placed in me by Senate Leader Phil Berger and look forward to working diligently with my colleagues to serve the best interests of North Carolina and its citizens.”

Historically, legislators use these committees to do the bulk share of policymaking, taking an in-depth look at the issues facing our state. This work often culminates in the form of draft legislation that lawmakers pursue the following session, in this case, the 2024 short session, which is set to begin in April.

Breakfast with First Responders

Father Vic and fellow Knights went above and beyond by organizing a heartwarming breakfast for our local First Responders. Their selfless actions remind us of the power of community and the importance of giving back.

The breakfast was a small token of appreciation for the tireless efforts of our First Responders. These heroes work day and night to keep us safe, and it’s moments like these that allow us to express our profound gratitude.

We're incredibly blessed to have such compassionate individuals in our community. Their kindness and generosity are an inspiration to us all. Let’s continue to support and thank our First Responders for their unwavering service. God bless them for all they do!

New Laws took effect on December 1

Several new state laws took effect on December 1, 2023, as outlined in the above graphic. These statutory changes deliver on the common-sense principles by which we govern: being tough on crime and protecting individual liberty.

As always, if you have questions on these laws or any other legislation that is working through the General Assembly, please don't hesitate to contact our office. We're here to take your feedback, answer your questions, and help you navigate state government.
