Welcome to the most recent edition of the Onslow Observer! This newsletter includes recent developments in our community, including new legislation that would allow cities to hire & train civilian investigators to handle minor traffic accidents. I also met with Sheriff Chris Thomas for the Sheriffs’ Association Legislative Day. I strongly believe that by working together, we can find innovative solutions and enact meaningful legislation that ensures the safety and well-being of every resident in North Carolina. I encourage you to connect with my office and share any questions, concerns, or ideas you may have. Your input and engagement are vital in shaping our future, and I am eager to hear your perspectives. As always, thank you for your continued support and prayers. At your service, Michael Lazzara North Carolina Senator
Sheriffs’ Association Legislative Day
It was a pleasure hosting Sheriff Chris Thomas at our office in Raleigh, as part of the NC Sheriffs' Association’s annual Legislative Day, where sheriffs travel from across the state to the General Assembly to meet with legislators and discuss important public safety issues. I’m proud of the work Sheriff Thomas does to protect & serve Onslow County, and I look forward to our continued partnership in keeping our community safe.
Civilian Traffic Investigators
Most vehicle collisions that occur in NC are minor fender benders where nobody gets injured, but they take several hours for police to investigate. Oftentimes, law enforcement are understaffed and have other emergencies to respond to…and they can’t be in two places at once. That’s why I support House Bill 140 — legislation that would allow cities to hire & train civilian investigators to handle minor traffic accidents. This measure will help local governments to fill the gap and provide all North Carolinians with greater access to public safety resources.
Visiting with Congressman Murphy
Last weekend, I got to spend some time with my friend, U.S. Congressman Greg Murphy, MD. We had a great time catching up with one another and making some new friends from across the state.
Legislative Update
The NC General Assembly has been busy; meeting with constituents, and various groups for their annual "Legislative Days," as we strive to address key issues and concerns raised by our community members and leaders.
Work on the State Budget continues as we negotiate a final deal with our colleagues in the House of Representatives.
It has been a very productive session thus far. Since our last newsletter, we have had the following bills which we've sponsored become Law:
BECAME LAW
SB 465: Cities/Remove & Dispose of Abandoned Vessels.
