Dear Neighbor,

Serving Onslow County has been one of the most meaningful responsibilities of my life, and I’m grateful every day for the chance to represent our community. Whether I’m in Raleigh or back home, my focus stays the same: listening to you and working to get things done for our families, servicemembers, veterans, and small businesses.

This month’s update shares advancements we’re making on public safety, jobs, and the future of our county, along with some important personal news about what’s ahead. I appreciate you taking the time to read through it.

As always, if my office can help you navigate state government or address a concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out. It’s an honor to serve you in the North Carolina Senate.

At your service,

Michael Lazzara

North Carolina Senator

From my house to yours, Merry Christmas! 🎄

2025 PUBLIC SAFETY ACT

ree

Earlier this year, my colleagues on the Senate Judiciary Committee and I passed Senate Bill 429, revising North Carolina law to increase penalties for secretly peeping into a room occupied by another person.

Starting December 1, 2025, tougher penalties went into effect for these crimes — especially when a camera or recording device is used. These cases can now be charged as felonies, giving prosecutors the tools they need to pursue justice for victims and hold offenders accountable.

This law closes dangerous loopholes and makes it clear: we will NOT tolerate this kind of predatory behavior in our schools or communities. Protecting our citizens and restoring peace of mind to victims is non-negotiable. Stronger laws like SB 429 reflect that commitment.

ree

As of December 1, another important provision of the NC Senate’s 2025 Public Safety Act is now law in North Carolina... It is now a felony to knowingly allow a child under 16 to be exposed to illegal drugs.

This law is about one thing: protecting vulnerable children. If you suspect a child is in danger, report it to local law enforcement immediately. Your voice could save a life.

CHAMPIONING PRO-JOBS POLICIES

ree

It’s an honor to be recognized as a 2025 Jobs Champion by the NC Chamber. Onslow County’s success is built on strong economic policy, a skilled workforce, and a commitment to keeping North Carolina the best state for business. We’ve made real advancements, and I’m determined to keep driving policies that create more and better-paying job opportunities across our region.

RECOGNIZING RETIREMENT OF JACKSONVILLE PD OFFICER JAMES “XY” BROWN

ree

It was an honor to recognize and celebrate Officer James “XY” Brown of the Jacksonville Police Department as he retired after 68 years of remarkable service.

A WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army before joining JPD, Officer Brown is believed to have been the longest-serving police officer in the United States — and North Carolina is grateful for his example.

His unwavering commitment to protecting our children and serving our community is an inspiration to all. 🇺🇸
