The Onslow Observer: Election Integrity, Hurricane Preparation, & More...

Dear Neighbor, We’re coming up on the official end of summer, as teachers and students have already returned to the classroom with fall activities kicking off. The NC General Assembly is also out of vacation time, having a busy week meeting with constituents and working out a final state budget with our colleagues in the House of Representatives. Our office is working overtime to ensure your voice is represented both in Raleigh and at home. Check out our latest newsletter which includes community updates, legislative news, and hurricane preparedness tips. As always, please feel free to reach out to my office if you need any assistance navigating state government. Your ongoing support and prayers are greatly appreciated. At your service, Michael Lazzara North Carolina Senator

Remembering 9/11

22 years ago, 2,977 Americans lost their lives in the deadliest terrorist attack in our nation’s history. We will Never Forget.

Carolina Strong

We continue to keep the entire UNC-Chapel Hill community in our prayers as they grieve the loss of one of their own faculty members, who was tragically killed on campus. UNC-Chapel Hill has opened a hotline for concerned parents, loved ones, and community members who have questions. The number is: 919-918-1999.

Safeguarding Our Electoral Process

Ensuring the integrity of our elections system is paramount to upholding the public trust in our democracy. That’s why we passed legislation (SB 747) to prohibit private funding of election administration, to set Election Day as the deadline for absentee ballots, to ensure transparency with poll observers, and to establish a process for removing ineligible voters from the voter rolls. Unfortunately, it seems that Governor Cooper would prefer to keep his current system of secrecy & Democrat-controlled election administration. The Governor’s veto of SB 747 is an affront to the transparent and accountable elections system that North Carolina voters deserve. Rest assured, we will be overriding the Governor’s veto very soon.

Back to School

We wish all students, teachers, and staff a successful school year filled with learning, growth, and opportunities for achievement both inside and outside the classroom.

Hurricane Season

As a coastal community, we are no strangers to the devastating impact of hurricanes, and many of our neighbors recently experienced the effects of Hurricane Idalia. It is a good opportunity to remind those in our community to Plan, Prepare, and Stay Informed ahead of any inclement weather. Storm preparation checklists and other important information specific to NC can be found online at www.ReadyNC.gov.

Lazzara Appointed to CSG South’s Leadership Skills Class of 2023

The people of Onslow County entrust me to be effective in representing their voice. That’s why I’m excited to join the ranks of my most respected legislative colleagues who have been a part of CALS programs in years past. This is a tremendous opportunity for me to sharpen my skills in communication, consensus building, and leadership – strengthening my ability to advocate for my constituents.

Legislative Update

We’re continuing to stay busy at the NC General Assembly, meeting with constituents and various groups as we continue to address critical issues that affect our community. Our session has been very productive thus far, with significant accomplishments. There remains a lot going on behind-the-scenes as negotiations continue with our colleagues in the NC House of Representatives. It’s shaping up that we will have a final State Budget passed in the coming days…then it’s in the hands of Governor Cooper. More information to follow soon.
