The Onslow Observer: New Marine Museum, License Plate Agency, & More...

Dear Neighbor,

I hope you enjoyed quality time with your loved ones this weekend. We're having a productive legislative session in Raleigh, and things are getting even busier as we move towards finalizing state budget adjustments this summer.

Please take a few minutes to read the latest updates on things we're doing to serve you. As always, don't hesitate to reach out if we can be of assistance. Thank you for your continued support.

At your service,

Michael Lazzara

North Carolina Senator

Memorial Day: Remember & Honor

Memorial Day was not just another day off from work, it's a holiday to remember & honor the courageous men and women — my brothers and sisters in uniform — who gave their lives for our country. Their sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the true cost of freedom. This weekend, we stood united in gratitude, reflecting on their unwavering dedication and bravery.

Governor's First Veto of Short Session

Despite our bipartisan effort shaped with input from Governor Cooper's own transportation agency — pre-negotiated with his secretaries — House Bill 198 fell victim to his veto stamp.

This misguided decision underscores Governor Cooper's allegiance to Green New Deal liberal activist groups over the best interests of North Carolina. His rejection of this well-crafted compromise is a clear indication of misplaced priorities, and we are determined to swiftly override this veto.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for Carolina Museum of the Marine

It was a great honor to join together with my fellow elected officials, veterans, active-duty servicemembers, community leaders and residents for the official Carolina Museum of the Marine groundbreaking ceremony. I was proud to support this project back in 2022 by securing a $29 million grant from the state. This 25,000-square-foot institution, expected to open in the spring of 2026, was founded by Major General Ray Smith — the commanding general for Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune from 1997 to 1999.

As a Marine, I’m proud to see this project come to fruition right here in Onslow County. The Carolina Museum of the Marine will be more than just a building, it will be a sanctuary of learning and reflection, preserving the rich history and honored traditions of the Marine Corps. My hope is that it will serve as a bridge, connecting generations, educating young minds about the values of loyalty, courage and honor that define our service men and women. Semper Fidelis.

Now Open: Jacksonville License Plate Agency

I’m excited to share that a new full-service License Plate Agency is officially open in Jacksonville, replacing the temporary state-operated express office.

The office is located at 1606 Country Club Road. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, excluding state holidays.

We trust that this new operation will help Onslow County residents get the essential license plate services they need in an efficient manner, cutting down wait times.

Onslow Student Earns Civic Local Foundation Scholarship

Congratulations to Onslow County student Caleb Langley, who was recently awarded a prestigious Civic Local Foundation Scholarship. As one of only 25 recipients, this is a recognition of Caleb’s high achievement in academic and extracurricular activities — an honor that he should be very proud of. I’m excited to see how Caleb’s academic and professional endeavors continue to grow, and I’m confident he will continue to make Onslow County proud.
